Goals:

The course Topics on Bioenergy, Biofuels and Renewables Chemistry will cover aspects of research on biomass, biofuel production technologies, and biorefineries. Renowned experts will be invited to present aspects of research on sugarcane and other plants of interest to biomass production, as well as microorganisms for the production of new compounds based on renewable carbon sources that can replace petrochemical derived products. This course will be comprehensive in regard to the issues to be addressed and will create interfaces between different disciplines. Students will be in contact with new research models and new developments in biofuels that seek an effective impact on biotechnological breeding of cultivars and on ethanol production, as well as new chemical and biological routes of production of chemical compounds. The speakers will address core problems of sugarcane biology, and other models, describing studies of the genome, metabolism and physiological adaptive responses to the environment. Biomass deconstruction processes (physico-chemical or biological routes) and the chemical synthesis of compounds of interest or catalysts will also be subjects of the seminar series. Thus, we intend that the student can learn new ways of manipulating plants and microorganisms, creating new alternatives for biofuels and chemicals derived from biomass.

Motivation:

There is a great scientific and technological interest for the development of new routes for production of bioenergy, biofuels and chemical compounds derived from biomass in the world. An increasing number of companies have been established in the country in search of suitable conditions for the production of biomass and bioethanol. Research groups based in São Paulo State institutions are responding to the demand for new technologies and they are dedicated to the study of fundamental aspects of biomass production and process engineering. The time is ripe for this course of topics on bioenergy research. With the establishment of an integrated research network based on innovative strategies, it is necessary to create a discussion forum among students so that they prepare for the labor market, thereby contributing to strengthen and keep Brazil at the forefront of research in Bioenergy.

Contents:

Aspects of research on: biomass; biochemistry and biomass genomics; biofuels technologies and biorefineries. Issues related to biofuel production on first, second and third generation; alcohol chemistry, sugar chemistry, oleochemistry, polymers and catalysts. Interdisciplinary aspects of a Systems and Synthetic Biology approach for the breeding of plants and microorganisms, and issues related to the impacts and sustainability of bioenergy.

Evaluation Criteria:

Students must deliver at the end of the course a 4-page monograph on one of the topics covered in the seminars (at student’s own choice).

Selection criteria: Priority will be given to students at the beginning of graduate course.
