RESEARCH ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

The productivity of my 41-year research career is documented with 167 publications, including 8 invited book chapters, and 191 abstracts of papers presented at national and international meetings. There have also been two articles for the World Book Encyclopedia, over 200 articles in the annual reports of the Hawaiian Sugar Planters' Association and the Hawaii Agriculture Research Center, several subject matter reports, and a series of articles for the newsletter of the International Society of Sugar Cane Technologists. Highlights of my research accomplishments include conducting and leading team research that:

  • Developed practical methods for inducing, synchronizing, or preventing sugarcane flowering for enabling sexual crossing and for reducing yield losses
  • Developed technologies for use of plant growth regulators for increasing sugarcane sucrose accumulation
  • Developed and applied technologies to produce genetic linkage maps to assist sugarcane breeders in producing improved cultivars
  • Developed, improved, and applied tissue culture and transformation systems for germplasm improvement  of papaya, sugarcane, and pineapple
  • Developed and improved technologies for assessment of genetic diversity of coffee, macadamia, papaya, pineapple
  • Assessed genetic diversity of plant pathogens responsible for sugarcane smut disease and blight of ginger root
  • Developed an extensive program for genomic analysis of papaya including production of multiple cDNA libraries, a BAC library, a highly saturated genetic map, a fine genetic map of the male sex determination region, and the isolation of genes for resistance to diseases
