Glaucia Mendes Souza

Dr. Glaucia Souza is a Full Professor at the Institute of Chemistry. Her lab focuses on sugarcane biotechnology, genomics and bioinformatics. Dr. Souza started her career as a molecular biologist. Her PhD degree versed on the cellular decision to transition from growth to development. She did two postdoctoral trainings in molecular genetics in the US at the La Jolla Cancer Research Foundation and Baylor College of Medicine. She is currently developing a genomics platform for plant improvement to select future-climate resilient plants and working on a systems biology approach in sugarcane to identify metabolites that might be of interest for bio-based chemicals applications and yield improvement.

She also works on sustainability assessments of bioenergy production and use. She participates in several international initiatives to disseminate knowledge and advise policy including the International Energy Agency, the Global Bioenergy Partnership (GBEP) and the Biofuture Plataform. She is a Board member of the Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE), the World Bioenergy Association (WBA) and the Brazilian Society of Bioenergy. She coordinates the Brazilian representation at the International Energy Agency Task Force on Bioenergy (Tasks 39 and 45) under the coordination of Itamaraty (Ministry of Foreign Relations, Brazil). She is a member of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) Energy group. She is a member of the Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo (FIESP-CONIC) Bioeconomy Committee. She is an Eisenhower Fellow.

Heitor Cantarella

Heitor Cantarella is an Agronomist and researcher in soil fertility and plant nutrition at the Agronomic Institute of Campinas (IAC). He is the Director of the Soils and Environmental Resources Center at IAC. He holds a Degree in Agronomy from FCA-UNESP Botucatu, Brazil and Master and Ph.D. Degrees in Soil Fertility from Iowa State University, USA.

His expertise is on nitrogen, fertilizer use efficiency, soil analysis, and environmental issues related to fertilizer use in agriculture. He has worked with fertilization with a variety of crops including maize, citrus, and sugarcane and also worked with nitrification inhibitors. He has produced important data on the greenhouse gas (GHG) nitrous oxide (N2O) from nitrogen fertilizers and residues (such as vinasse, straw, filter cake), use of potassium, phosphorus, and micronutrients. Presently, most of his research efforts are on issues of nutrition and sustainability of sugarcane for biofuels production.

Dr. Cantarella is also engaged in the Nutrient for Life in Brazil, an initiative promoted by ANDA and IPNI to educate the common citizen about the nature and the benefits of fertilizer for food production and quality. In the past 20 years, Dr. Cantarella has coordinated a soil analysis proficiency test that presently includes 136 laboratories in Brazil and other countries.
