The first funded project – Bioenergy contribution of Latin America, Caribbean and Africa to the GSB project - LACAF-Cane I – started in February 2013, led by Professor Luis Cortez of UNICAMP – focuses on opportunities for sugar cane ethanol and electricity production in Guatemala, Colombia, Mozambique, and South Africa.  Aspects considered include:

a) diagnosis of the energy and food situation,

b) evaluating the physical potential for biofuel production,

c) analysis of alternative production models, and

d) integrated analysis.

The second funded project - Global Sustainable Bioenergy Initiative: Geospatial & environmental analysis of pastureland intensification for bioenergy - started in May 2015, led by Professor John Joseph Sheehan of Colorado State University (CSU) - focuses on global-scale geospatial analysis relevant to bioenergy, including the tasks:

a) Potential for Pasture Intensification and Subsequent Energy Crop Production.

b) Sustainability of Pasture Intensification and Subsequent Energy Crop Production

c) Geospatial Analysis, Remote Sensing and Modeling

Additional proposals for social and environmental projects are under development.
